Ignat Wiig (b.1992) is a Norwegian photographer born in Belarus right after the fall of the Soviet Union. His work probing the construction of identity, playing with the visual and cultural codes, celebrities, gender, and photography. Even though studying photography quite recently, he is becoming one of Oslo’s significant documentarians of youth. He responds to a reportingly conservative, straight forward and wealthy Oslo with both humor, idolism and criticism, appropriating images of people who fascinates him. Wiig transforms himself, displaying the diversity of human types and stereotypes in his images and with small notes of despair and hopelessness, he hits the nerve of today’s society. His work builds on these studies in portraiture, character, and charisma. The photographs almost touch the sense of a still-life image; the subjects all pose in a calm, focused way: looking straight at you. The images feel quiet and loud at the same time. Quiet because of the silent mood, and loud because of the strong, rebellious voices documented. Wiig has during a very brief period worked with several major Norwegian musical artists, big names in the Scandinavian fashion industry, shoot covers and been published in ELLE, VOGUE, AnOther Magazine amongst others.

CO: To those who are not familiar with you or your work; how would you briefly
explain it?
IW: Experimenting with visual and cultural codes and documenting beauty.

CO: What is the most important drive for you to create and why?
IW: Mostly its self-expression. But also exploration and I just love to collect good images. It makes me happy.

CO: How do your own experiences influence your work?
IW: A lot. My work often is based on past experiences and feelings. I'm always trying to catch or build a feeling I'm familiar with or resonates with me.

CO: Can you elaborate on an important moment in your life where you experienced a big change, chose to make one or another event which altered your way of thinking or your approach to creativity ?
IW: Probably when I moved to Norway was the most impactful moment in my life and in general. I would probably be a totally different person with totally different interests.

CO: What do you want to communicate through your work? Is there a message - political or otherwise?
IW: Well, for now it's just about beauty and stuff I find interesting. But I can see clearly that overtime when I grow as a person and form my life views - my art will definitely have a socially relevant message. I think it's too egocentric to live life for yourself. I think it's important to find the way you can contribute to society as an individual and convey your experience and knowledge if you gain something during your life.

CO: Who or what do you value as a great inspiration for you creatively?
IW: I love to travel and learn new stuff. People in general are a great inspiration of mine. Also I love to be introduced to new social groups and new cultures. I feel like it gives me a lot of new knowledge and inspiration.

CO: How does digital and social media affect or inspire your life and creations?IW: I use social media a lot as a source of information. So I guess it has an effect and inspires me a lot.

CO: Do artists of today have some kind of of social responsibility?
IW: Yes, always. What you communicate and what ideas, morals and views you convey to the public.

CO: If you could change one thing in the world today, what would it be?
IW: Peace.

CO: What does «collective» mean for you?
IW: To work together toward a shared goal.

CO: What are the main reasons you collaborate with COLLECTIVE OSLO?
IW: I enjoy being a part of the community and being associated with people I share the same values with.

CO: What role do you think art should play in today1s society?
IW: I think that art is a progressive reflection and documentation of the time, place and collective unconscious. Me personally - I like when art enlightens.

CO: What do you aspire to? In the near future? In life in general?
IW: To inspire and be helpful for others. It gives me happiness.
